Writing a Poem
(based on "The Wakeful Closet Door" by W. Clifford)

Students do one of the following 3 options:

1. Poem should imaginatively describe a relationship between animals and humans.
2. Poem should begin "I'm afraid there is a ____________ in my closet."
3. Poem will be about fears and anxieties of childhood (relating to animals, things that might be lurking in the dark, in the closet, under the bed, etc.) or that they still have.

Poem must be 8-14 lines long (or longer), and must include 3 of the following 5 poetic devices: 1) alliteration; 2) a rhyme scheme (end of line, example: aabb, abab, etc.; 3) effective reptition; 4) rhythm (a steady beat is recognizable, they have counted syllables to achieve this); 5) compound words that work as adjectives: example "man-masked" bear.

Social Studies 8C - Advertising Assignment

8C - Economics Social Studies
Advertising Assignment
Due: Tuesday, May 5th
Mrs. Edwards/Miss Mitchell

Note that the "blueprint" for the advertisement is due on Wednesday, April 29th.

Students have 3 handouts for this assignment:
1. Assignment handout outlines what is required and provides parameters and suggestions.
2. Additional handout on "Marketing to Teens: Advertising Strategies.
3. Rubric for the assignment on what is required and how it will be assigned a mark 4, 3, 2, 1, with 4 being the highest.

The assignment is to make a poster which is an advertisement selling a product or service to teenagers in the Fredericton area. Students can invent a new product or service or base their advertisement on an existing product or service. Alternatively, students can chose to do a parody of an advertisement. Some students have said they would like to design a product to sell, so they will be making a 3D object, and this is also acceptable. If students decide to design a product, they don't do the poster, but they still do the write-up. I'd like students who do a 3D product to "sell it to me" in an advertisement promotion which will be an oral presentation.

Everyone does the write-up part which is outlined in the assignment handout and must be a minimum of 100 words. If you are doing the parody assignment, you will make your write-up a parody as well.

This is a major project for this unit and will be marked out of 40.
